Getting to Know: Abigail Brown

Getting to Know: Abigail Brown

Abigail Brown is a mum of two adult children and soon to be Nana!

She had hit 98.1 kg after not recovering well from plantar fascia surgery in March of 2015. Over this time, Abigail was unable to exercise and became unfit, unhealthy and gained weight and ultimately decided to have gastric sleeve surgery in February 2016.  Since then she has lost 38kg and is very happy at a healthy 60kg.

Abigail isn't a massive gym fan, but manages to drag herself there. She loves the freedom she has now that she is able to walk and make it up the stairs of the three tier stand at Domain stadium without having to stop and look at the view 3 times !

We recently took the time to catch up with Abigail to find out more about her weight loss and how Boomers has played a part in her journey.

What does your ideal day consist of?

2 lattes with added Boomers
Breakfast: Yoghurt with Boomers Protein and grain free granola, omelette
Morning Tea: Cheese, almonds and a protein ball
Lunch: Soup with added Boomers
Afternoon Tea: Fruit smoothie or a protein shake, with added boomers
Dinner: Salmon, prawns, spiralled zucchini or cauliflower mash or cauliflower fried rice

As I work from home (as a Family Day Care Educator), I look after children from 6.30am to 4.30pm 4 days a week. In the Summer I like to walk with a friend in the mornings. On my day off I go to the gym in the morning. On the days that I do work I try to attend the gym 1 to 2 evenings a week, or use my spin bike, tubes and weights at home.

Sometimes my days are very hectic and unpredictable. I have found adding Boomers to my meals sustains my energy. I can have shakes and protein balls ready to go for when I don’t have the spare time to sit down and eat.

What’s your favourite exercise?

I love Pump, Spin, Cardio ABT and walking.

What are the benefits of adding protein to your diet for you?

As I am a weight-loss surgery patient, I know it is important to include protein in every meal.  It aids in healing and supports skin, hair, bone and nail health. It also helps burn fat instead of muscle for a healthier weight loss. As I have had shoulder injuries in the past I can’t afford to lose too much muscle, so the addition of Boomers helps me with strength and aids in muscle mass.

What are some everyday ways you add protein to your diet?

I have a Nespresso coffee machine and add 2 heaped teaspoons of Boomers to every coffee I make.  I struggle to eat in the morning, so this is a good way to get some protein. I add Boomers to yoghurts, shakes, smoothies, soups, mash and protein balls.

What are your tips and advice for those thinking of taking Boomers Protein?

For weight loss patients, start with smaller amounts until you have adjusted.

Meal prep as much as you can, so you can ensure you are reaching your protein goals.

Get creative; ensure adding Boomers becomes part of your routine. For me it has become habit to add it to many things throughout the day.  For example, if you drink lots of milk, make up a litre with Boomers to use during the day.

I was recommended Boomers on one of the weight loss surgery support pages, and it was top of my list as it was firstly WA owned. I tried many, but have always found Boomers to be the best flavourless powder.

What are your goals/fitness goals for this year?

To be able to run/jog, even if for only 5 minutes.

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice about protein what would it be and why?

Ensure it is a priority in your diet to maintain and support good long term overall health and wellbeing, including muscle and bone support as you get older.
More protein in your diet can reduce cravings and desire for late night snacking, which may have helped in weight gain in the first place.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

I had surgery to repair Plantar Fasciitis, which was not completely successful. I was unable to even walk around my street without being in absolute agony.

I have now completed 12km City to Surf (walking), The Colour Run, Miss Muddy, walk 5 km most days, and am back at the gym.

What are your tips for staying fit and healthy on the go?

Make sure you have protein balls handy or make a shake before you leave the house. In winter I always have a warm soup in a flask.

Can you share your favourite Boomers product or recipe with us?

As for products, I use both Boomers Whey Protein Isolate and Brown Rice Protein

As far as recipes go, I would have to say Protein Balls are my favourite. They are a really great snack. I love the Matcha Coconut Bliss Balls in the first book and also adjust this recipe to make cocoa balls.

I replace the honey with rice malt syrup, roll them in cocoa powder instead of matcha.  I also make a Potato and corn chowder that I add Boomers to when reheating a bowl. I love cheesy cauliflower mash too.

Coffee Bites:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup of flaxmeal
  • 1 1/2 tbs ground coffee
  • 1/2 cup creamy almond/peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup rice malt syrup
  • 1/4 cup Boomers Whey Protein Powder
  • 1/4 cup Boomers Organic Brown Rice Protein Powder
  • 1/2 cup cacao nibs

Method:

  1. Combine oats, flaxmeal, coffee and protein powders together and then add the cacao nibs.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the almond/peanut butter and rice malt syrup.
  3. Add in the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until thoroughly combined.
  4. If the mix is too dry, add 1tbs of water.
  5. Make into small balls and let them set in the fridge.

Thank you to Abigail for taking the time to share her health journey and tips.

Check out when we also caught up with Jessica Lowe, Wellness Coach here.

We believe Boomers is the best natural protein powder because it is sourced from only the highest quality milk from grass fed, hormone-free cows, it contains abundant naturally-occurring branched chain amino acids (BCAA’s) and 3 essential amino acids that produce glutathione which is vital for recovery, growth and disease resistance. Boomers organic vegan brown rice protein is our most unique product, and one that we are very proud of for two main reasons... One is that most brown rice protein sources available are sub-optimal in terms of their amino acid profile compared to whey protein but ours is not - This is due to our source using the whole grain of brown rice during manufacture.
